Tony was 2nd MV50 |
Tony Johnson of Grantham Running Club took part in the
Cransley Hospice Half Marathon on Sunday 15th September. Although
conditions in Grantham were overcast and cool when he set off, the cloud soon
broke as Tony made his way south towards Kettering and by the time the race
started at 11:00am it was already warm. By the end of the race it was well over
20 degrees Celsius, making for a challenging run as there was little shade to
be had on the course and the course featured an undulating out and back section
between miles six and ten.
As well as the Half Marathon, there was also a 10K, along
with a ‘Flash Dash’ for the under 8s and a 2.3K Junior Run for those aged 8–14.
Based in the village of Cranford, the races are held annually to raise money
for Cransley Hospice. Sponsors Western Power Distribution this year covered the
cost of organising the races thus maximising the amount raised.
Despite the challenging conditions Tony ran well to finish a
fine sixth overall, winning second prize in the V50 age category.
The half marathon was won by Peter Currington of Rugby and
Northampton AC in 1:21:16 with Shannon Driscoll of Higham Harriers the women’s
winner in 1:33:08. There were 223 finishers in the 10K and 87 in the half
marathon.
