The 5000m Track Challenge

On Saturday August 21st two Grantham Running Club members took part in the 5000m Track Challenge held in Nottingham at the Harvey Hadden Athletics Stadium.

Racing in the same heat Dean Riggall and Sam Jepson-Rivers; Sam making his debut and Dean his first track event since he was 17.

The morning had loomed grey and overcast, however, with the commencement of the event and earlier heats rain had settled in, making the track a little slippy with standing water in places.

It at least made the racing conditions cooler.Hanging on to the pacer from the gun, Sam clicked off laps just off target pace in circa 86 seconds.

Dean also settled into his work as the laps racked up, his lap times coming in around 88 seconds.

Having taken the racers to 4k, the pacer dropped out; it was here that Sam lacking in experience let things slip with laps of 88-89 seconds – as the group he found himself had also collectively slowed. Saving his kick perhaps a little too late, he dropped a final 400m of 76 seconds to finish in 18:11.79 and finish 3rd in the heat (it proved to be no less effective as he moved from up from 5th at the start of the bell lap).

This time represented a 15 second improvement to his road 5k time for context.

Dean’s consistency and determination throughout paid dividends as he picked off runners not employing his metronomic pacing. It saw him cross the line in a fantastic: 18:22.11 and age grading in excess of 76%.

Again, for context, it showed a 19 second improvement over his best parkrun time – the only comparable distance for this long-distance specialist.

Elsewhere, GRC alumni Jonathan Palmer clocked 16:37.82 and Matthew Williamson chalking up a PB in 18:21.17 in their respective heats.

Chris Perry of Vale Royal/Liverpool Harriers ran the fastest of the meet in very credible 13:52.79.

Rebecca Murray of Bedford & County/Brunel Uni London being the fastest woman in 16:06.40.

Chase the Sun Races

Simon back at his best

On Thursday 19th August, 12 members of Grantham Running Club made the trip to Prestwold Hall, Leicestershire to take part in the Chase The Sun Race Series. Three races categories we available, 5k,10k and 10 mile. With both the 5k and 10k featuring in round 4 of the clubs GP series.

The evening saw near perfect running condition's for competitors, compared to Chase The Sun held earlier this year which saw runners compete against rain and wind.

In the 5k race the club had 7 members competing, all with impressive finish times. First home was the ever impressive Robert Howbrook with a return to form 20:11, scoring a whopping 80.88% age grade, the first GRC male to hit the national level marker in 2021. Closely following was 5k specialist Peter Bonner with 20:15, a seasons best for distance.

Caroline pleased with her time

Chris Armstrong was next, also clocking a SB with 21:23 followed by Stuart Baty with 22:46, a 20s PB. Then it was Paul Davis who having returned from injury achieved a great time of 24:15. Tommy Napier was happy enough with his 25:25 in only his 2nd attempt at the distance. The inspirational Simon Hartley was the final green vest home with an outstanding 29:07, a near 3min PB after restarting running from scratch in the spring.

The 10k race drew 4 members competing and achieving impressive times. Robin Atter caught the GRC captain's eye in his debut 10k race with 41:43. Seasoned runner Gav Medows was hoping for some shoe technology magic but struggled with the multiple lap format of the course. He's certain to build on his 43:04. Caroline Davis came first in her V50 age category and was pleased with her 50:04. Then it was Julie Riggall with an outstanding time of 55:25, a bumper 3min pb, her previous best set as far back as 2018.

In the 10 mile Andrew Pask finished with a great time of 01:07:32 in his first outing over the distance for 3 years.

London Landmarks Half Marathon

Emma and Tracey

On Sunday 1st August 3 members of Grantham Running Club headed to London to run in the 4th edition of the London Landmarks Half Marathon.  Originally scheduled for March before being moved to May then eventually to 1st August.  There had been concerns over what conditions a mid-summer half marathon would be run in especially after the last few weeks however on the day the conditions were dry and cool to start with getting a little more humid later.  The race was run with COVID secure protocol in place with lateral flow test required 1 day before the event and then the start was split into 7 waves to start the race and separate the runners.  The twisty slightly undulating route as the name suggests takes your round some of the sights of London, starting in Trafalgar Square a short trip south of the river to see the London Eye before moving onto The Royal Courts of Justice, St Pauls Cathedral, Bank of England, The Gherkin, London Monument out to see the Tower of London and Tower Bridge before returning via Embankment to the Houses of Parliament finishing on Whitehall just before Downing Street.

Stuart with his MacMillan top
First home for GRC was Stuart Baty who continued his 2021 form with a new PB of 1:50:57 beating his previous mark by over 3 minutes.

Next home was Tracey Lattimore in a time of 2:16:14 soon followed by Emma Weighill with a time of 2:24:07.

Tracey has been waiting a while to take up her place after originally getting a ballot place for the 2020 version, and she was happy having run with no expectations with her time not being far off her PB and was her first race for some time.

Emma acknowledged the excellent organisation of the race with the very apt theme front line workers and the fantastic atmosphere all the way round the course, she was just pleased to get round having struggled to refuel in the sunnier later conditions.

The race was won by in a time of 1:11:54 by Nick Harris-Fry from London with the first lady home being Abbie Pearse from Sheffield in a time of 1:23:22.

Continental Thunder Run

Late substitute Ben leads home the A team

Grantham Running Club had a bumper 42 athletes taking park in this weekend’s year late 24h Continental Thunder Run at its regular venue Catton Park, Walton-on-Trent. The Conti Thunder Run (affectionately “TR24”) is an off-road 10km relay race against the clock. It is renowned for being physically tough and mentally challenging to all competitors whether they’re running solo, in pairs, team of five or large teams of up to eight.Continuously run around the technically demanding cross country route from noon on Saturday through to noon on Sunday.

Flying the flag as GRC’s only solo runner, Caroline Davis kept moving throughout the entire 24hrs, completing an outstanding 13 laps, that’s an eyewatering 80 miles on this exhausting course. Beating her own target by a lap, Caroline just kept going. Her titanic effort was good enough to place her 7th lady solo runner in a strong field of 61!

Representing GRC in the club’s only team of 5, anchor man Matthew Williamson led them out with the team’s fastest lap of 44:22 which was his first lap of an impressive 6, despite battling with injury throughout. The team named Grantham Bling Quintet was completed with captain Robert McArdle, Catherine Payne, Paul Rushworth and Ben Mason who all completed a strong and consistent 5 laps to help the team to a record 6th place finish out of 71 other 5 person teams.

The remaining club runners were competing in larger teams of 8 runners. The fastest of these was simply called ‘Grantham Running Club A’ and proved to be deserving of that moniker. Captained by Sam Jepson-Rivers, they were initially Led off by TR24 rookie, Aaron Smith. He was followed by guest runners Rori Rodell and fastest lap runner Joe Clarke (41:58) the team were in a solid position from the early stages. Andrew Pask, Sarah High, Matthew Atter and Ben Hatherley completed the line-up in this competitive team. Averaging 49:45 despite the usual drop-off in pace during the night, the team remained competitive throughout. The final lap ran in by Ben Hatherley (pictured) with his teammates there to support him, the team finished in an all-time best 5th position of 146 teams and were 2 minutes shy of starting a 30 lap and securing 4th.

The 2nd strongest GRC team fielded named ‘Thunderballs’ – a nod to original captain Vicki Ball who had to withdraw days before the event due to Track & Trace. Led off by stand-in captain Sam Dodwell with their fastest lap time of 50:20, his first of 5 laps, the team was made up of only 7 runners, meaning they had much shorter rest periods than other larger teams. Team members Paul Davidson, Sylv Hull and Andrew McAllister were able to utilise their vast TR24 experience to support 1st timers Robin Atter, Martin Rodell & Jason Walker, pushing the team to an impressive average lap time of 57:26. Finishing in an impressive 20th place, the team were rightfully delighted with this impressive showing.

The next team of 8 was the GRC Gingerbread Men. Led off by the trail loving Dale Towning, the team completed a solid 23 laps. Supported by captain and seasoned TR24 runner, Mark Hillson the team averaged 1:02:47 which included fastest runner Russel Maksymiw’s lap time of 50:06. Wayne Baxter, Kate Marshall and John Bainbridge completed the team which ran through the night before Rob Howbrook arrived on the Sunday morning to complete 2 laps, just 24hrs after racing the Heckington 10 mile road race.

‘GRC Not Fast Just Furious’ was the final competitive team. Martin Carter was the captain of the team made up of CJ Walker, Tracy Webb, Zoe Wragg, Justyna Gill, Konrad Owczarek and new member Poppy Marriott. Impressively, CJ Walker ran the 10k morning race before the main event had even begun. Add that to her three laps during the main event to make her weekend total very impressive indeed. Peter Bonner also arrived on the Sunday after running at Heckington to complete a double lap, giving the rest of the team some much needed respite and running their two fastest laps in the process, giving the team a 1:14:09 average and a 20 lap total.

The remaining team (Grantham Running Club E) was a team made-up of some talented athletes who are coming back from injury or fitness setbacks - not wanting to potentially dent team aspirations and bank some strong training miles. With a ‘just see how it goes approach’, the team was made-up of Helen Brown, Dean Riggall, Naomi Jepson-Rivers, Fraser Marshall, Gordon Geach and Richard Payne. Completing 15 laps despite doing very little running at night, the team produced some surprising performances with Dean Riggall’s eye catching 46:46 proving he’s clearly not as injured as he thought.

After the event, club members were left with the feel-good sense of achievement and tiredness in equal measure. Aside from the main event of running, the social aspect that’s been missing throughout the pandemic, drew warm comments too. A number of members had entered TR24 for the first time, with Zoe Wragg summing up their enthusiasm with "“Fab weekend with the GRC at TR24. Such a challenging course but despite the moaning I’m sure I’ll be back next year!”
