Peterborough Grand Prix Series

Grantham Running Club had three athletes taking part in the first race of the Peterborough Grand Prix Series round the lakes at Ferry Meadows. As usual the opener attracted a large entry with just over 400 registering on the evening. On a tight course with some 90 degree bends coming early on the gun timed results did not favour GRC’s veteran athletes who respected the pace of the more youthful track athletes and gave way to them at the start. Rob Howbrook was delighted to match his time, to the second, that he set on a faster course in Lincoln last month. His 19:09 gave him an 83% grading which is the best this season for GRC and also  his first position in his age category gave him a flying start to a championship where he finished runner up last year by one point. Next home was Catherine Payne going sub 21 minutes, her fastest time at Peterborough for two years and despite having raced a 10k three days earlier good enough to get her a top 25 ranking nationally. She looks well placed to compete again for a title she has won for the past two years. The final runner for the club was Robert McArdle in 22:07 some four seconds inside his last years’ time.
