Bolsover 10k

Two members of Grantham Running Club took part in the Bolsover Derbyshire 10k Road race which had been rescheduled from last December due to icy conditions at that time. A bright cold clear day with a slight breeze greeted the 495 runners starting out on the undulating course with a fast, slightly downhill finish

First to the finish for GRC was Paul Jepson with a time of 50:19, followed by Richard Urquhart who crossed the finishing line in 52:23 seconds.

Race winner was Mathew Quibell of Bassetlaw Tri Club in 32:29.  The ladies winner was Rebecca Miller of Derby AC in 38:08.

Both Paul and Richard reported that it was a well organised race, with plenty of marshals and encouragement and both said they would be back.  All competitors received a nice long sleeved t-shirt as a momento of the race.

Folksworth 15

Well 2023 has dawned cold and frosty, and many people in Grantham Running Club and elsewhere have found their minds turning to the marathons that are so easily signed up for in the autumn, but the new year brings cold reality and a need to really focus on the training.

Sunday saw 7 of those runners make the short trip down to the A1 to a small village in Huntingdonshire which hosts a challenging 15 mile timed road run. With three noticeable hills on both laps, this is a proper test of conditioning and mental ability to maintain an appropriate pace.

All the runners have completed at least one marathon so everyone knew that this was a run to take on tired legs, with a full training programme in the week beforehand so that when the higher stakes tests come, confidence can be taken from overcoming these previous challenges.

With that in mind, all the runners were happy with their results, although Dean and Warren cut the start time a little fine and so had to pass a number of runners before fully getting into their stride – there are several parking areas scattered around the village and the organisers use taxis to bring everyone to the start, which normally works well but does add to the time needed on the morning of the event.

The underfoot conditions remained somewhat treacherous, with only half of the first downhill having been gritted and several of the shady areas keeping ice and frost throughout both laps. Fortunately, all of the GRC runners completed the event without mishap and no major incidents were observed by any of those runners.

From the start the runners spread out according to their expected pace, with Dean managing to move past several clubmates. Warren got ahead of the others until Craig and Caroline caught him on the final hill, but the downhill final half mile allowed him to regain his lead. Robin was grateful to several runners who he didn’t previously know, who, in line with the training ethos of the morning, worked with him to keep pace up the hills and encourage each other to the finish. Sarah was happy to use the morning as a break from a hectic work schedule, finishing 3½ minutes faster than when she last ran the event in 2020.

Sarah and Caroline demonstrated their class by achieving podium positions in their age categories, with Sarah second and Caroline third.

The layout of the course means that there is a long back straight with a noticeable wind hitting everyone’s face, this was the coldest and slowest part of the course and lasted for a good third of the run, but really for a January day the conditions were surprisingly good.

Discussions afterwards focused on large number of very positive marshals and support teams around the course, all of whom were praised, and how nice it was that the event provided a vest rather than a t-shirt.

The first male finisher (and vet 40) was David Hudson from Huntingdonshire AC in 1:20:45, first female runner was Kanina O’Neil from March AC in 1:38:30. In the team results Huntingdonshire finished first overall, with GRC 14th out of 25 (an average of 25 minutes per runner behind the winning team). The winning female team was Rutland Running and Triathlon Club.

Sherwood Pines 10k

On a cold but bright and sunny morning, five members of Grantham Running Club made the trip to Sherwood Pines in Nottinghamshire for one of the first competitive races of 2023 the ‘Nice Work New Year 5k and 10k trail race’. All five of our runners had chosen the longer 10k option which involved 2 laps around the beautiful frosty landscape trails and footpaths.  The route was described by the organisers as ‘an undulating course with challenging inclines’ which we know means hilly!

Once underway the race was always going to be challenging but with an overnight frost of -3C the going underfoot was not too bad and with enthusiastic and very vocal marshalling helped all of the runners along the course.

The race was won by Ben Walkingshaw in a very respectable time of 38:09:00 particularly taking the conditions into account. The first female was Sylwia Dmuchowska in a time of 45:38

From a GRC perspective, first home for the club was Simon Allsopp in a fabulous chip time of 52:55, followed by Joni Goodband who is still recovering from injury.  She ran a very respectable 60:00 dead and later commented that she was pleased with her overall run and performance on the day.

Judi Allsopp was next home for Grantham in 1:08:38 and finally running in almost together were Yvonne Buckley in a time of 1:16:23 and Brendon Buckley with 1:16:25 who was delighted to be first in his age category.

The general consensus of opinion from all runners/members was that the race was well organised and marshalled and with biscuits, Jaffa cake and fruit at the finish to go with your medal, what’s not to like!

Cross Country Championships - Biscathorpe

Grantham Running Club fielded two strong teams for the Lincolnshire Cross Country Championships held at Biscathorpe at the weekend.  The course is known for its numerous river crossings where runners can end up in water up to their waists and it's not unusual for shoes to be lost!

First up was the men's race which took place over 10k.  First back for GRC was Peter Bonner in an admirable 45:10, the deep water crossings posing to barrier to him.  The evergreen Robert Howbrook was next in 47:06, followed soon after by Richard Payne whose comment was that the course was tough but rewarding.

Club Chairman Andrew Pask was next in 48:52 and though he questioned his sanity he enjoyed his run.  Shortly after was Robin Atter in 50:04, a great time despite needing the odd walk.  Following close behind was Peter Jennings in 51:47, then Paul Davies (55:02), Paul Jepson (56:55), Andrew MacAllister (57:52), Craig Drury (58:03) and Richard Urqhart (61:01).

The mem's team effort netted them 5th place in the Veterans category.

Next up were the ladies who ran 5.7k.  First back was Holly Durham who despite initial apprehension about the course, stormed round in a brilliant 28:18.  Cross country stalwart Rachel Hamilton was next in a fanastic 28:35.

Holly's sister Penny Hodges also flew round in 32:03 and despite appearances really enjoyed herself.  Next was Caroline Davies in 33:07. Closely following was Captain Sarah High who is a regular cross country machine ran a determined round to cross the line in 33:26. Michelle Parzcuk put in a great run to finish in 34:07 followed by Paula Ebbins in a fantastic 39:11.

The ladies' fantastic running earned them first place in the Veteran team event and all came back with their trainers still on their feet!

Adana Half Marathon

Grantham Running Club's resident rolling stone Nev Chamberlain continued his mission to run races in far flung places with a trip round the the Adana Half Marathon in South East Turkey.

The international running event has taken place each year since 2011 over a super flat course with only 2 feet of elevation.

Nev finished the race in 2:03:06 which was around 4 minutes slower than his time at the same event last year, possibly due to an extra lap in the sun taking its toll.
