Martin, Yvonne, Caroline and Brendon before the race |
On Sunday a small number of
Grantham Running Club members travelled north to Newcastle Upon Tyne to take
part in one of the worlds greatest and largest half marathons The Great North
Run, always a popular event with not only the masses but international athletes
alike including our very own Sir Mo Farah who went on to win and become the
first ever athlete to win five Great North Runs. The race starts close to the
center of Newcastle and progresses south over the iconic Tyne Bridge with
many other local land marks to be seen before finishing on the sea front
at South Shields some 13.1 miles away as a laterally run race. As always the
passionate Geordie spectators that were several deep in places and the Red
Arrows flying over the Tyne Bridge shortly after the start of the race and
showing off there skills at the finish line later in the day made it a truly
carnival type atmosphere for all taking part.
The
event attracts approximately 65,000 runners each year from all corners of the
world making the course pretty much congested all the way along from start to
finish. First over the finish line for Grantham was the ever reliable Caroline
Davis in 1:53:13 followed by Haley Sugden 2:12:31 only just off the pace for a
PB. Although spread out due to the staged start the chip times recorded for the
following members were all close together Magaretta Murray 2:38:10, Martin
Carter 2:38:36, Brendon Buckley 2:38:46 and wife Yvonne Buckley 2:38:51 getting
pipped on the line by Brendon who had been left behind with 5 miles to go but
came back strong at the finish.
