Grantham Running Club’s Craig Drury headed to the Midlands’
largest city on Sunday 14th October to compete in the Simplyhealth
Great Birmingham Run. The race, which attracts over 11,000 entrants, was held
in torrentially wet conditions, which Craig found mostly favourable as a means
of keeping cool. The revised 2018 course was promoted as being flatter than the
previous incarnation, but Craig half jokingly commented that ‘they just moved
the hills to different parts of the race’ including a tough climb in the final stages
of the 13.1 mile course.
Craig was delighted with his finishing time of 1:40:57, not
only because it was a new PB, bettering his old best by over two minutes and
over twenty minutes faster than his first half marathon a year earlier at the
Great North Run, it also reversed a two race streak of half marathons with
slowing times. His target is now finding a spring 2019 marathon where he can
make his debut over the distance.
