Louise Kennedy of Grantham Running Club joined around 2500
runners at the Benidorm 10k, which
accompanied the Benidorm Half Marathon, on
Saturday 2nd March.
With the 10K and the Half Marathon starting together at
sunset, the popular Spanish resort provided an amazing atmosphere for racing. Enthusiastic
crowds lined streets along the entire course, their cheers resonating
especially in Benidorm Old Town, which runners headed to and through having
begun along the sea front. Having run through the Old Town, which featured the
only incline on an otherwise flat course, runners returned to the Benidorm sea
front – the 10K runners finishing having completed one lap, the half marathon
runners completing a second lap of the course before finishing.
The very well organised event featured a race village which
opened on the Friday. Each finisher received a medal, badge, t-shirt, bag,
water, isotonic drink, banana, protein bar, muesli bar, energy gel, and cooling
gel for their efforts.
Taking part in her first international 10K, Louise
thoroughly enjoyed the race finishing just a few minutes outside her best in
1:09:05. She hopes to enter the race again next year.
The 10K was won by Francisco Vicente Macia Garcia in 31:51
with Giula Vettor the winning woman in 37:24.
