Four members of Grantham Running Club joined over 9000 other
runners at the Saucony Cambridge Half Marathon, which took place on Sunday 3rd
March. With Storm Freya edging towards the city, runners faced increasingly wet
and windy conditions as they took on the 13.1 mile course around many of the
city’s historic landmarks.
The race began and ended at Midsummer Common, passing
locations including the Round Church, King’s College and the Fitzwilliam
Museum. Befitting of a big city race, the public came out in large numbers to
support and shout encouragement along the route accompanied with a variety of
different musical bands, including a steel drum band, a Madness tribute act and
a Chinese drumming band.
In a race that was considered by the GRC runners taking part
as friendly and well organised, the only frustration experienced was the sheer
volume of runners which had to funnel down some of the narrower lanes in the
centre of the city.
First home for GRC was Ian McBain with a time of 1:43:20. He
was followed by Anthony Boyle who knocked three minutes off his existing PB
with a fine 1:50:59. Next home was Mark Edwards in a time of 2:01:28, closely
followed by Claudette Joint in a time of 2:02:08.
The race was won by Michael Kallenberg of Cardiff AAC (who
may be best known for breaking the world half marathon record dressed as a
superhero (Robin) at the 2016 Cardiff Half Marathon) in a new PB of 1:06:40.
The winning woman was Victoria Knight of Cambridge & Coleridge AC who finished
in 1:17:20.
