It was on to the Isle of Harris
for Grantham Running Club’s Nev Chamberlain to round off his participation in
this years Heb3 series of Outer Hebridean half marathons at the series
finale. This race is a linear event with runners being bussed to the start at
Borve on the west coast of South Harris and then running back to the finish in
the town of Tarbert.
Knowing
what was to come later along the course Nev set off at a steady pace using the
first five miles of undulating road along the coast to prepare for a tough mid
section of the race. Shortly after passing Luskentyre beach which is regularly
voted one of the top ten beaches in the world the road ramps up from sea level
at the 5 mile mark until reaching the high point of 460ft just before the 9
mile mark, a headwind on this stretch added to the mix but he managed a
consistent pace and although losing a few positions initially he'd gained a few
by the time the road finally started to go back downhill.
From
here to Tarbert the gradients stay mainly in the runners favour and Nev managed
to gain a couple more places finally crossing the finishing line in 1:53:33. This
race was the conclusion of the 5 race Heb3 series with the best 3 results
making up the runners aggregate time Nev's time of 5:36:53 placed him 23rd
overall out of 89 competitors.
