GRC's members who had the
privilege of running in Team A were; Grant Davies, Joe Clarke, Richard Payne,
Matthew Atter, Stuart Sinclair, Andrew Pask, Scott Jones and Caroline Davies.
First to
set off was debutant Grant Davies who ran his first mile at an incredibly fast
pace in-order to gain a position before the cross country course narrows.
Bringing his team home in 6th place after one lap he passed on to Joe Clarke
who ran a similar 'full throttle' pace.
After
the first round of sunny afternoon laps, the team began the evening/night round
of laps in 9th position overall. Andrew Pask ran the first fully dark lap and
was fortunate to enjoy the 'Singer In The Woods' performance who he ran past
three times. The night laps were not without incident though; Richard Payne had
to withdraw after 2.5km of his 3rd lap through injury, passing to Grant Davies
to complete the lap. Also Andrew Pask finished his lap at 04:30 without Scott
Jones there to receive the baton. Andrew on heavy legs ran to wake Scott and
then continued to run the first 2.5km of Scott's lap. Despite the incidents the
GRC team only lost around 10mins in total.
Dawn
broke and the team were pushing on. After some maths and with most runners
having completed their 4th 10km lap, it was obvious that in-order to allow
Caroline Davies to start her first lap before the 12:00 shut-off the final two
runners would need to average under 50mins. That they did and Scott handed the baton to Caroline just 3 mins
before the cut-off after running their 2nd last lap, the unstoppable
Caroline set-off for her 4th lap, securing the teams lofty position.
The
whole of Team A awaited the arrival of Caroline on the finish straight armed
with the GRC flag to celebrate. Caroline, showing no let-up in the pace arrived
minutes earlier than expected. After being passed the flag the team couldn't
keep Caroline's pace for the celebratory finish but were delighted with their 9
place out of 215 teams of 8.
