Every year the village of Winterton in North Lincolnshire
holds a traditional agricultural show, with a busy weekend of activities
including equestrian, classic cars and tractors, fairground rides, craft tent
and of course, lots of food and drink.
Within the show was a 10 mile, fully licensed road race
which was attended by one runner from Grantham. On another hot day this summer,
Peter Bonner decided to enjoy the run rather than try to race the event, a
decision he was relieved by once he realised quite how undulating the course
became.
Starting with a lap around the main show ring, the run soon
moved out to run through the village and then an anticlockwise rectangle along
some, rather potholed, local roads. The run was very well-marshalled, with four
water stations which was helpful in the heat. The roads were not closed to
traffic, with a mile and half along a reasonably busy B road, though marshals
were well-stationed and the cars were mostly polite.
Included in the race entry fee was free admission to the
Show and the goody bag afterwards included a very nice medal and a buff.
Peter recommends this as a small, quite tough, but very
friendly event, particularly for anyone wanting a day-out with a family and
some locally produced cider and burgers as a tasty but not particularly healthy
refuel after the run.
